Questions

Quick answers.

The questions readers ask most. If yours is not here, ask a librarian.

Who can use the Library?

Council and Management members, faculty, students and staff of Central University, and permitted research and visiting scholars.

When is the Library open?

The Library is open Monday to Saturday, and closed on statutory public holidays. Hours differ by campus and change in the examination and vacation periods. See Libraries and hours.

How do I borrow a book?

Present a valid identification card at the circulation desk. Students, lecturers and staff may borrow. See Borrowing.

Can I renew a book?

General Collection items can be renewed twice, unless another reader has asked for the item. Renew before the due date.

The book I need is out. What can I do?

Go to the circulation desk with a valid ID and place a recall or hold request. When the book is returned you are sent a notice, and it is held for you for 10 days.

What if the book is in another library?

Ask library staff. They will borrow it for you from any Central University library, or from another library, on request.

How do I use the databases off campus?

Start at the off-campus access portal on the E-resources page. Some databases restrict on-campus or off-campus use under the publisher's terms.

Can I ask the Library to buy a book?

Yes. Students and faculty can use the request form on the Ask a librarian page. The Librarian checks the Library's stock first.

Can I photocopy a book?

Photocopying for research or private study is allowed within copyright law, which permits only 25% of a book at a time. Project work and dissertations cannot be photocopied. Printing is available.

Can I donate books?

The Library accepts donations in materials and cash. A donation may be declined if the donor sets conditions the Library cannot meet, or if the materials are outdated by newer editions. Ask a librarian before you bring them.

What happens if I return a book late, or damage one?

Late return means losing borrowing rights for a semester. Mutilating a book means paying three times its cost, and you pay for any book you lose. See the offences and sanctions.
